newsweek:

A bloodied protester at Zuccotti Park. More here, which alleges this punishment was for knocking off an officer’s hat (including a shot of cops taking off his pants?!).

Here in France, I’ve been following the Occupy movement, especially Oakland and NYC’s, but this is the first photo that’s really made me stop and think. I know, I shouldn’t be biased, and the officers are ‘just doing their job,’ but is this really necessary for a protester who flicked off an officer’s hat? The protester didn’t have to provoke the officer, but is this really what happens when you show disrespect to an officer? Your head gets bashed in? When I followed the Iran revolutions in summer ‘09, I saw photos of people getting beaten and trampled by the police, but somehow this photo of pure pain and youth makes me so angry and sad. How and why is this allowed? The Occupy movement as a whole gives me hope, but the police’s actions make me question those who we are supposed to trust. The police is supposed to protect us, not harm us. A bit of insolence shouldn’t equal blood streaming down a face. ‘Doing your job’ isn’t this. And NYT, did you really have to add the last bit about the police overtime costs in the update? Save it for a different article that describes all the costs.
